Industrial Ammonia Scrubber Systems & Design
R.M. Technologies of America specializes in the design and installation of ammonia-based scrubbers. Ammonia’s unique chemical characteristics require precise component selection and professional installation to ensure safe, high-efficiency operation. We offer a range of modular scrubber units, varying in size and capacity, designed to meet or exceed specific industrial requirements.
System Operation Overview
The scrubbing process utilizes a counter-current flow within a recovery vessel to strip ammonia from gas streams:
- Gas Entry: The ventilation gas stream containing ammonia enters at the bottom of the vessel through a sparger and flows upward.
- Liquid Injection: The scrubbing liquid (typically water) enters via a spray nozzle at the top and flows downward.
- The Fluidized Bed: Ammonia removal occurs within a fluidized bed where the gas and liquid interface.
- Recirculation: The bottom of the vessel drains continuously into a recirculation pump, sending the weak ammonium hydroxide solution back to the top for further scrubbing cycles.
Automated Discharge & Neutralization
Our systems are designed for continuous monitoring to manage the saturation of the scrubbing liquid:
- Saturated Solution Management: Once the solution reaches a pre-set temperature or concentration limit, the unit automatically pumps the saturated solution into a holding tank.
- Fresh Water Makeup: The system automatically introduces fresh water to restart the recovery process.
- Neutralization Options: If the weak solution (typically below a pH of 10) cannot be disposed of directly, it can be neutralized on-site:
- Process: Citric Acid is used to neutralize the solution.
- Result: This creates Ammonium Citrate Dibasic, a stable, non-toxic salt that is safe for discharge to waste treatment facilities or off-site disposal.

The RM Technologies Safety Advantage
Because ammonia is a hazardous substance, we provide comprehensive support beyond the hardware:
- Turnkey Services: Concept design, engineering, fabrication, and installation.
- Regulatory Assistance: Helping your facility meet compliance standards.
- Preventive Maintenance: Scheduled programs to identify potential issues before they escalate.
- 24-Hour Support: Emergency response and after-hours technical assistance.
Keep Your Emissions in Check and Your Facility Compliant.
A malfunctioning ammonia scrubber is more than just a maintenance headache; it is a primary point of failure for environmental compliance and site safety. When your scrubber efficiency drops, you risk hazardous vapor release, corrosive damage to surrounding equipment, and severe regulatory penalties. Our Ammonia Scrubber Preventive Maintenance Checklist provides a comprehensive technical roadmap to ensure your packing media, spray nozzles, and chemical dosing systems are operating at peak neutralization capacity. Developed by engineers with 30+ years of ammonia integration experience, this guide helps you identify "invisible" issues like media fouling or pH sensor drift before they trigger an alarm. Download this checklist to maintain a clean, odor-free facility and ensure your "closed-loop" system stays truly closed.
