Leadership and Experience
Thomas Garousi has over 38 years of expertise in high-pressure industrial ammonia systems and chemical handling. He covers all aspects of ammonia engineering, from simple flow control skids to advanced turnkey storage facilities, with strong knowledge of thermodynamics, metallurgy, and compliance. This enables RM Technologies to collaborate efficiently with plant engineers.
Expertise in Safety and Operations
Throughout his career, Mr. Garousi has focused on risk and safety studies specific to ammonia-based systems. He is well-versed in the design and operation of ammonia systems, with a particular emphasis on the development and implementation of site-specific Risk Management Plans (RMP) and Process Safety Management (PSM) programs. His experience includes procedure development, operator training, emergency response planning, hazard analysis, and off-site consequence modeling. As a technical resource for the ammonia industry, Mr. Garousi has been instrumental in assisting more than two hundred companies with the implementation of ammonia-specific safety programs. His comprehensive understanding of anhydrous ammonia properties, as well as the necessary equipment and procedures for safe handling, makes him a pivotal figure in the industry. In addition, Mr. Garousi and his team have acted as an expert for numerous organizations and government agencies, including ADM and the Department of Energy.

Mr. Garousi has served on key industry committees, including ASTI’s Ammonia Information Technical Committee, the IIAR research committee, and as chair of IARW’s Refrigeration Committee. His affiliations span organizations such as the National Safety Council, ASME, IIAR, IARW, Refrigeration Technicians and Engineers, Association of Energy and Environmental Engineers, NACD, and the Chemical Manufacturer’s Association.
