Uses of the Fascinating Chemical Called Urea
Urea is a natural occurring chemical that is present in the blood, sweat, and milk from mammals it is produced during the breakdown of proteins in the human body. However, in a scientific breakthrough in 1828, urea was the first natural compound to be artificially synthesized using inorganic compounds. The chemical compound urea is made by heating ammonium carbamide, a combination of ammonia and carbon dioxide, in a sealed container. The heat dehydrates the compound and forms urea, a crystal-type substance. Since this discovery, Urea can be found in a multitude of industries from the agricultural industry to the automotive industry all the way to the medical industry.
More than 90% of world industrial production of urea is destined for use as a nitrogen-release fertilizer.[6] Urea has the highest nitrogen content of all solid nitrogenous fertilizers in common use. Therefore, it has the lowest transportation costs per unit of nitrogen nutrient. Soil bacteria possess an enzyme called urease; it transforms the urea back into ammonia which is beneficial to the plants surrounding it.
In the automotive industry urea is used in the catalytic reaction to reduce the NOx pollutants of exhaust gases. There are different ways that urea is used in the process. For example, in newer diesel vehicles, users must fill up their DEF tank (diesel exhaust fluid). A fluid made up of 32.5% Urea and 67.5% de-ionized water. This fluid is sprayed into the exhaust stream, breaking the NOx emissions into harmless nitrogen and water particles.
Lastly the medical industry has many different uses of Urea. Many topical dermatological products contain Urea. it is used for psoriasis, xerosis, onychomycosis, ichthyosis, eczema, keratosis, keratoderma, corns, and calluses. An interesting use of Urea is in neuroimaging; concentrated urea can be used to make fixed brain tissue transparent to visible light allowing for a deeper imaging of neural processes than previously obtainable.
